FABE programme • Communities • Circular economy
TidyNigeria helps households and communities understand, separate and recover useful materials—turning environmental awareness into practical habits, cleaner neighbourhoods and circular value.

The programme
TidyNigeria is FABE International Foundation’s community-facing waste and circular-economy programme. It combines public education, practical clean-up activity, source separation and recycling access so that residents can make more responsible choices and recover value from materials that would otherwise become pollution.
FABE describes the programme as “experiential advocacy”: people learn by participating. Community women and other residents are educated and trained, recycling methods are demonstrated, and recovered materials can be connected to incentives or livelihood opportunities where an appropriate local model exists.
Programme model
TidyNigeria is designed around four linked actions. Together they help communities move beyond one-day campaigns towards habits and infrastructure that can endure.
01
Build understanding of waste, pollution, public health and the value of recyclable materials through accessible community education.
02
Help households and local organisations sort recoverable materials before they become mixed, contaminated or lost.
03
Create clear routes for collection, aggregation and transfer to responsible recycling partners and local recovery systems.
04
Connect participation to cleaner public spaces, stronger community ownership and—where feasible—incentives and green livelihood pathways.
Infrastructure for participation
Source separation works best when people can see where materials should be taken, understand what is accepted and trust that recovered materials will enter a responsible value chain.
The documented 2022 TidyNigeria phase was created as a community and household recycling drive in Lagos. The programme’s physical hubs supported collection and created visible places for environmental learning and participation.
Ways to participate
A durable local recycling system depends on coordinated action. TidyNigeria provides practical entry points for residents, community institutions and partners.
01
Learn what to separate, prepare materials correctly and use designated collection or drop-off routes.
02
Host education, mobilise participation, identify suitable collection arrangements and establish shared routines.
03
Support responsible logistics, equipment, market connections, data and long-term operational capacity.
The material journey
01
Avoid unnecessary materials and choose reusable options where practical.
02
Keep accepted recyclables apart from food waste and other contaminants.
03
Use a community hub, agreed collection point or organised pickup route.
04
Aggregate and transfer materials for responsible recycling and value creation.
Evidence and reporting
FABE’s original TidyNigeria programme page describes quarterly community clean-ups, sustainability education, training, technology-enabled recycling and incentives for recovered materials.
The Coca-Cola Foundation’s published 2022 contribution record states that its grant supported five recycling hubs and equipment for material collection and recycling in Lagos. Contemporary reporting also documented the VGC launch and the plan to replicate the hub in four other communities.
Explain the waste journey and the choices residents can make before disposal.
Connect individual action to community systems, collection routes and recycling infrastructure.
Use participation and local learning to strengthen the model over time.
Community action
Community clean-ups can reveal the scale and types of waste in a neighbourhood, build public awareness and create a shared starting point. TidyNigeria links that momentum to waste separation, collection and recycling practices that residents can continue afterwards.
FABE’s current social education reinforces the same principle: the waste journey does not end at the bin, and reducing, separating and disposing responsibly are practical steps towards cleaner communities.
Build a local pathway
Community associations, estates, schools, businesses, funders, recyclers and public institutions can work with FABE to assess local needs and shape an appropriate TidyNigeria intervention.
